Naava, Rakka and Kuru Selected as Winning Name Proposals for the Pyhä-Luosto Visitor and Culture Centre

Published 16 May

The names were selected in the open naming competition in March and April. A total of 66 persons entered the competition, yielding 147 suggestions for the name of the centre. The competition also aimed at finding a slogan for the centre and a name for the Siberian jay mascot. The result was 61 candidate slogans and 73 proposals for naming the mascot. The jury awarded the three best entries from each competition category. The final name of the Visitor and Culture Centre and the slogan will be announced in August when the foundations for the building are due to be laid. The name of the Siberian jay mascot will be revealed at the centre's opening in June 2012.

The jury concluded that the yield of the competition will serve as an excellent basis for continuing the work to name the Visitor and Culture Centre and the mascot, in addition to providing a starting point for phrasing the slogan.

The name candidates Naava, Rakka and Kuru for the centre were deemed the best suggestions. Of the many different slogans proposed, the following were awarded: A gateway to sheltered ravines and windy fells; A park of fells and ravines; and Pyhä-Luosto – the park of 12 peaks. The three best name suggestions for the mascot were Väärti, Naavatar and Kalle.

All the entries submitted reflected the natural features and cultural history of the area. The Pyhä-Luosto fell country and the unique geological characteristics were well-represented. As regards cultural history, the aspects that seemed to inspire the creation of both slogans and name suggestions were the history of the Forest Sámi people, the arrival of pioneers as well as the tourism that is relevant to today’s culture. The slogans, in particular, also highlighted the significance of Pyhä-Luosto as a place to calm down, to become one with nature and to revive body and soul.

Fifteen geological hiking maps of Pyhä-Luosto were raffled off to all who entered the competition. The winners have been notified in person. We congratulate the winners and extend our warmest thanks to everyone who participated in the competition and to the businesses in the Pyhä-Luosto resort who donated the prizes!

The construction of the Pyhä-Luosto Visitor and Culture Centre will begin in June 2011. A year later, in June 2012, we will celebrate the opening of the new centre. The versatile services of the Visitor and Culture Centre – hiking information, a tourist information point of the municipalities of Kemijärvi, Pelkosenniemi and Sodankylä, as well as an exhibition, restaurant, conference facilities and a large auditorium designed for holding concerts – are a major addition to the Pyhä-Luosto resort. Pyhä-Luosto National Park is the sixth most popular national park in Finland in terms of visitor numbers, and the Pyhä-Luosto resort in Lapland is growing rapidly.

The Metsähallitus visitor centres have a key role in presenting and protecting Finnish nature and its diversity. Within the national parks, Metsähallitus manages some of Finland’s most valuable nature destinations and offers everyone an opportunity to experience nature in its original state.
