Naava Reaches Roof Height in Pyhätunturi
Published 15 Dec 2011
Naava, the new Visitor and Culture Centre in Pyhä-Luosto, has reached roof height. A topping out ceremony will be held on 15 December 2011. The construction project is on schedule, and customer service in the new building will begin in March 2012. An exhibition will be completed by summer 2012, when the building will be fully opened to the public.
The new Visitor and Culture Centre will accommodate experiential exhibition premises and lounges, a restaurant, an auditorium, conference and training rooms, and offices. Naava will be centrally located in the Pyhä-Luosto tourist resort.
The contractee of the Pyhä-Luosto Visitor and Culture Centre is the Lapland Natural Heritage Services of Metsähallitus. Architectural design and master planning are performed by CASE Consult Ltd. Structural engineering is carried out by Pohjois-Suomen Rakennetekniikka Oy, HPAC design by Arkins Suunnittelu Oy and electrical design by Insinööritoimisto Sorvoja Ky. The main contractor is building contractor Peab Oy. The ventilation contractor is Lapin Peltinikkari Oy, the piping contractor Putki-Heikkilä Oy, the electrical contractor Ounasvirta Oy and the automation contractor Stenfors Oy. The construction site is supervised by Prodeco Lappi Oy.
Experiences to the senses
The outward appearance of Naava is already evident at this stage. Once the building is completed in early 2012, work will begin on the inside with four months of intensive exhibition building that will transform the interior.
The exhibition will provide a wealth of information on the area’s natural features and cultural history. Information will be available in visual form as well as through other senses. Topics can be explored by examining dioramas (three-dimensional models), browsing touch screens and listening to stories. The great geological upheavals and transformations in the area have occurred over a puzzlingly and breathtakingly long period of time – and Naava’s exhibition will present these on a 12-metre-long timescale! A cylinder-shaped experiential space will introduce the most spectacular landscapes in the national park, the cycle of the year and unique details about the wildlife.
Joining forces for Naava
Naava is backed by two projects implemented as a result of extensive cooperation. This excellent cooperative network will support the launch of Naava’s operations and continue to develop the centre in the coming years.
The budget for the construction of the Pyhä-Luosto Visitor and Culture Centre is EUR 4.1 million, of which EUR 2 million come from the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, EUR 1.6 million from the Ministry of the Environment and EUR 0.5 million from the funds of Metsähallitus.
The budget for the exhibition and operating model project totals EUR 550,000. Most of the funding (80%) comes from the European Regional Development Fund and the state. The remainder is provided by other parties involved in the project: Metsähallitus, the city of Kemijärvi, the municipalities of Pelkosenniemi and Sodankylä, the Geological Survey of Finland, the University of Lapland, the Vocational College of Eastern Lapland and the Pyhä-Luosto Tourist Association.
