Rewarding efforts for traditional landscapes

Efforts put into taking care of traditional landscapes are bearing fruit. The maintenance is quite labour-intensive, but it is worth every effort. It has allowed many now-rare species of plants to regain their foothold.
Metsähallitus employs its own staff and contractors alike to maintain traditional landscapes in state nature reserves and some privately owned protected areas, with efforts by local farmers proving to be of great assistance. During the last ten years, the combined area of destinations maintained by Metsähallitus has grown from 1,000 to 2,600 hectares.
