Sipoonkorpi becomes Finland’s 36th national park

The Parliament of Finland approved the Act on Sipoonkorpi National Park in March 2011 and the natrue reserve will become Finland´s 36th national park. 

Even now, Sipoonkorpi is a valuable recreational area and its natural heritage is internationally unique. Metsähallitus, which holds responsibility for the national parks’ management, will start planning the management and utilisation of Sipoonkorpi in autumn in cooperation with various interest groups.

The purpose of establishing the national park is to protect the forest, rock, mire and traditional landscapes in southern Finland, the natural heritage of which have international significance. Roughly 100 threatened species or those listed in the national watch list have been spotted in Sipoonkorpi. Visitors also appreciate natural features in Sipoonkorpi: according to a study carried out by Metsähallitus, the most important reasons for visiting Sipoonkorpi were experiencing natural features, relaxation, mental wellbeing and a chance to get away from noise and pollution.
