The major Swedish forest owners are attractive business partners for European energy producers. At World Bioenergy, Sveaskog plans to focus on establishing international business contacts within biofuel.
“For some time now we have noted considerable interest from European energy companies who want to use more wood raw material in their combined power and heating plants (CHPs). Sveaskog wants to be in that market but is not sitting still and waiting to be asked. We are actively out there marketing ourselves with the international power companies,” says Roger Johansson, biofuel coordinator at Sveaskog.
Sveaskog is Sweden’s largest forest owner with 3.3 million hectares of productive forest land. The company has been working for over ten years to build up efficient production resources for biofuel and is today the Sweden’s sixth largest supplier, corresponding to 2.8 TWh. We have some 40 customers in Sweden and are on the point of starting to export to international customers.
“In Sweden, the major growth phase is over and the market has now matured. On the other hand, European demand is still in its infancy. Prices thus far have not justified export operations but our assessment is that the growing need for renewable raw material from Europe will encourage a price increase,” says Johansson.
Sveaskog is one of few exhibitors at World Bioenergy who is there to market itself as a biofuel supplier.
“I am surprised there are not more forest owners taking this opportunity to promote themselves to foreign biofuel purchasers. We have received indications of considerable interest among European energy companies to establish contacts during the trade show,” says Karin Fällman, Biofuel PR officer at Sveaskog.
