On about half of Hungary’s forest area (1075 ha) sustainable forest management is carried out by the 22 state forest companies. These companies are limited and 100% state owned, where ownership rights are excersised by the Ministry of Agriculture as from 16/07/2014. The Companies are primarily engaged in forestry, but also carry out other activities such as hunting, woodworking activities, as well as public welfare tasks. In 2015 they harvested a net 3.7 million m3 wood and the average headcount was 5648. The Companies’ main priority is to enhance the public wellfare function of the forests under their management and makes effort to raise the awareness of this value.
